“Growing up, my grandmothers and mother canned until the garden crops and wild berries were gone. Beans, corn, tomatoes and juice, kraut, relishes, beets, greens, pickles, jellies and jam/preserves. It was part of their heritage here in eastern Kentucky. Now, I am trying to learn the art of canning with the guidance of my Mom and my family before me. These lids would be great and maybe I could pass them on to my daughter along with the canning skills I have learned.”

I’m starting to be really big into canning, growing my own food, and overall just being more self sufficient. As I was looking around at what I would need to can my own foods; as well as learning all about it, I was a little disappointed to know that ALL metal canning lids have to be replaced after every use.

How wasteful is that? Discarding metal every time you are done using it. Not even to mention that buying replacement lids to fit into your canning rings would end up costing more money!

Yoplait is stepping in with some donations, but you have to participate. For every pink lid saved and sent in by December 31st, 2010, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The minimum for this will be $500,000 with a maximum donation of up to $1.6 million!

So make sure to start sending in your lids if you haven’t already!
